Turn your DSi into a torch

Posted 12th of March, 2010 at 05:10 pm by Infernal Monkey Infernal Monkey is online now

Fumbling for your keys whilst falling down a bottomless pit? Only got your DSi on you? Never fear; Kaasa Solution's Flashlight application is here.

Rather than simply leaving the DSi at its initial boot up screen for a bright light, you could spend 200 Points on this for the same result. Although you'll be able to change the colour on Flashlight, and there's both a flashing warning mode and an S.O.S. signal mode. The press release claims that one might come in handy the next time your plane has to land on a deserted island. Indeed.

Flashlight is out next week, March 19, for 200 Points.

As stupid as it sounds, I think the DSi actually needs apps like this rather then just games all the time.

If they're free. If they're going to be THIS simple, then it shouldn't cost money. More extensive apps, sure...

Pretty cool, but my backlit screen already does that when im on the ds menu. I cant use Dsiware anyway, so my backlit screen will do.

Nintendo really need a 100 or even 50 Point option to match the iPhone's $1.19 price tag.

They should release a WiiWare title that mimics the DSi start-up screen too.

The DS menu is already 95% white anyway, yet at least five people will buy this and that'll be $10 more than it cost them to make it.

Why would you use a DSi for a torch, I mean a mobile phone is way easier.

I use the phone usually, but the DS is brighter and has two screens which can often make the difference between seeing and not seeing what you are looking for in the dark.

If you make the screens point at each other at a 45ş angle, then shouldn't that make it ~doubly bright? :P

the only problem I see with this, is the fact that iPhone usesrs get it free!?

I really don't understand Nintendo's approval process for DLC at all. It seems pointless crud like this gets straight through, yet there are many products that get stuck in some indefinite waiting list with developers having no idea when their games are coming out.

Add in the DSiWare needs an OFLC rating whereas iPhone games do not and its not easy for DSiWare devs.

That is the only problem? What about the fact its a totally unnecessary program as screens are backlit without running some stupid app.

Yes TSPoenix - but if it was for free who cares, why would you complain about it? That's why I say that is the only problem, because most people would say, 'oh well at least it's for free' if it was for free.

BTW - I had no idea iPhone games/apps don't need rating!?

They don't need ratings, and a developer kit is much cheaper, hence why there are so many apps. That said the OFLC has discussed making iPhone apps require ratings which would pretty much kill the platform in Australia.

Still WiiWare, DSiWare and the App Store are all plagued by the same problem. Finding good programs among the bad ones is near impossible. Top 10s are one of the worst ways of doing this as while its good for the 10, its terrible for everyone else.

Until there is a good way for users to find things they like or might like in an Amazon/Netflix-esque fashion these stores aren't going to reward creators for putting effort into for quality content. I suppose this is why Nintendo's services are flopping and the App Store is full of crap.

Interesting idea... although it should be free. I mean for goodness sake its just a simple flashlight app - why pay for something like that? I just use my phone to see in the dark anyway... I always have it on me :P
