Playstation Move goes one step further to mimic Wii

Posted 11th of March, 2010 at 09:51 pm by Lucario Lucario is offline

As the Game Developers Conference continues in San Francisco, Sony have made an official presentation revealing their new Playstation Move motion controller. After the success of the Wii, Sony has decided to get in on the motion controlling action by creating their own motion based controller, it will even be able to connect with a Nunchuk inspired accessory for two handed gameplay. If a Wii Remote and Nunchuk rip-off wasn't evidence enough that Sony has received all its inspiration from Nintendo, the Playstation Move comes bundled with Sports Champion. Sports Champion offers 1:1 movement just as Wii Sports Resort does and even includes games such as Sword Fighting, Target Shooting and Table Tennis... Where have I played those before?

Microsoft still haven't revealed very much about their Project Natal but right now it seems much more original then the path Sony has taken. The Playstation Move controller comes bundled with a Sports Champion game and Playstation Eye camera and will be out later this year.

It'd be funny if Sony went all the way with the motion concept and drove away all their 'hardcore' gamers.

Also, nice screens Clash.

Personally I don't see how Sony plans to keep their coloured lightbulb remote unbreakable. The Wiimote needed a condom, so this thing will need a trojan.

Hey guys, remember how a year after Nintendo revealed the Wiimote, Sony revealed the sixaxis - Which went from a boomerang design back to a PS2 controller with the rumble ripped out to make room for rushed motion sensors?
Yeah, that was pretty bad. But THIS??
This what we see right here was JOKED about in mock-up years ago, and it's finally happened. Sony knows it's a big rip-off, we know it's a rip-off, and I'm going to bet a lot of the public will know it's a rip-off as well.
Who the hell would want this when basically everyone in the world already has a Wii anyway.

Exactly, most people with a PS3 already have a Wii, and I dont think Sony sales will increase all that much just because some games will utilise motion now either. Sony, Im sorry to say, but your the weakest link.

Natal just seems to be this without a controller, therefore a lot less control. Not sure that's all that more original. But we'll see I guess.

I am looking forward to seeing how Sony Move turns out... not sure I'd buy it though. Maybe when Tiger Woods 11 comes out.

It'll be good for those who like sports sims though, people who like motion control won't have to choose between the version with motion control and the version with the good graphics.

I think you guys are being a bit blind if you think nobody will buy this.

If I had a ps3 I'd buy it (I'll be getting Natal instead). I like the idea of the wii, and although some of the games are great, I wouldn't touch most of them were it not for their control system (the conduit for example...I don't really like it with motion controls, let alone without).

The motion plus isn't perfect. There are virtually no good games that use it yet. If Sony can bring out some good "hardcore" games to use this thing with they'll essentially have a HD wii with better games...people will eat it up. I'm not saying it will bring in the casual crowd like the wii has, but I reckon they'll sell like hotcakes with ps3 fanboys who were too stubborn to get a wii, and with wii owners who wanted a HD version.

The thing is though if developers limit their games to only being playable with the PS Move, they'll be cutting off a bunch of potential consumers who may have wanted the game but don't want to have to purchase the PS Move too.

Unless this is really cheap or comes bundled with heaps of games, I don't think developers will jump onto it, just look at the PS Eye and Wii MotionPlus?
Posted 12th of March, 2010 at 10:34 am by Dousatsu Dousatsu is offline
Dousatsu's Avatar
In terms of cutting off potential consumers, the obvious solution is to have a non-move control scheme option ala Brawl, Zelda, MK, etc. but obviously not all devs are willing to put in that much effort.

The wii's poor 3rd party support is a problem for the whole console, it's not limited to the motion plus. And the PS eye wasn't a very popular idea in the first place.

It depends whether Sony are smart enough to learn from Nintendo's mistakes. If they can acknowledge that the wii's greatest weakness is the ps3's greatest strength ("hardcore" appeal) then I'd say they'll be able to pull it off. After this wii sports ripoff, they need to smash out a few really good proper games to get ps3 gamers interested.

I wonder if the roles will switch now:

PS3 gets all the shovelware... while the Wii gets all the core games.

Right now PS3 is in a good spot it's a core gamer's console. It has games we want. Modern Warfare, Prince of Persia, BioShock, Final Fantasy, Left 4 Dead, Grand Theft Auto, etc. Most of the games on the market are not shovelware they are not games going to waste.

Whilst with Nintendo yes they have core games. But I bet you those who don't live on fourms or the net wont know the difference between Punch-out and Fight Night Wii. Or Sports Party and Wii sports Resort, Or even No More Heroes and Imagine.
Also all of the shovelware is stacked with all of the Core games too. There is no separation hell at times I couldn't even tell the difference between Little King's Story and My Sims. I wasn't too sure if Little King's was shovelware or if it was an actual good game.

Anyway back to the main.

Sony, (sigh) I thought you were smarter than this. Then again looking at how you actually got into the industry and the idea you had back then, I can't blame you. Nothing's really changed.
Despite that though. I still love your console. But unless you do something special with this:
ie Final Fantasy Game with Motion Sensoring. I wont be falling for this trick. I already have a Wii. Which I love to bits. I don't need another.

Also I can't help but laugh at their designs. Honestly I was worried about the Wii-mote looking like a dildo... but no you guys amazed me. Sony has the real Dildo.

I take back what I said, based on the fact that the Sony nunchuk has no motion control. Not many people are going to want to buy 4 move controllers to play sword fighting games with their friends. And it severely limits what they'll be able to do with shooters. Goddamn it Kotaku.

Also, from the hands-on reports I'm hearing, it sounds like it has just as many limitations as the motion plus.

Shovelware will always flock to the most popular console since that's where they're likely to sponge the most money off of. It was predominantly with the PS2 last generation and now it currently exists with the Wii and DS this generation. These games prey on people who can't tell the difference in order to drive sales. To counteract this, people need to better educate themselves. Specifically the casual crowd and parents who buy games for their children as they don't know any better.

Shovelware will exist as long as the companies responsible continue to make money off of it.

You're missing the key point that the Wii is easy to develop for compared to the PS3, hence easier to pump out shovelware.

Sorry to nit pick, but left 4 dead is a microsoft exclusive, and I imagine that it would be rather difficult to design a cylindrical object that doesn't resemble a dildo in some way or another.

I will probably buy this to play resident evil 5 with the RE4 Wii edition control scheme.
I don't know why playstation and microsoft didn't just implement motion control next generation.
This playstation MOVE controller is an awkward optional purchase. Like the Wii Motion Plus, only a small percentage of consumers will purchase this add on, therefore development will probably be half assed, a small percentage of games will support it, and it will never fully get off the ground so to speak.

I actually like the look of this Playstation Move over the Wiimote, but it's amazing how Sony have managed to dodge every patent Nintendo must've implemented to protect their design. I've read a bit about patenting and they cover everything from design shape to technology used within.

As if the Playstation Move is "copying" the Wii. If this is copying the Wii then the Playstation Dualshock copied the N64's controller or the SMS's d-pad copies the NES's one. Video game technology is obviously evolving in both cases I mentioned and just because the Wii did it first it doesn't mean that the Wii is the only console allowed to have motion control. Seriously, guys, get a freaking grip. Nintendo's been setting trends for ages. If they weren't, the PS3 controller would look more like the Atari 2600's, with a joystick instead of a d-pad and analog sticks.

In short, you're all nuts. Get some perspective.

Well copying the hardware isn't a surprise or a bad thing really. I have to say their Wii Sports copy is pretty uninspired and lifeless though, not a good way to sell the product. They need to do more than just another Wii Sports clone, they need something new the Wii doesn't have. And they need that on both the casual side and some gamer-orientated titles.

Honestly while I applaud Sony for being different, its probably too different from the Wiimote and Nunchuck to make cross platform development smooth, and that was probably Sony's best bet at getting new titles (assuming they drop the 720p requirement also).

With the button layouts being so different its not going to be a simple case of what works for the Wii will work for the PS3.

Though they're doing it in a shameful way. The way they mirror Nintendo with the games is hilariously sad.
