Opera Browser for Wii levels up

Posted 13th of November, 2008 at 10:50 pm by Cameron Cameron is offline

Nintendo are currently planning the release of a new update for the Wii Opera Browser. Version 2.0 will enable tab support, allowing users to hold six pages at once, as well as allow users to access their Wii mail posts without having to return to the Wii channel front page. The service will also undergo tweaks and trims for ease of use.

The browser is also said to be compatible with Nintendo’s new Wii Speak microphone, though details of its purpose are currently absent.

The 2.0 browser will replace its predecessor in the Wii Shop and continue to cost 500 Wii Points, though Wii owners who already have the service do not have to pay for the upgrade. The update is set to hit the Australian Wii Shop this December.

Maybe I'll use my Wii to browse instead of this boring computer!

I don't think anything could really fix console web browsing from what I've experienced of it.

Could this really work? My Wii has a bad habit of running out of memory while it's loading a single page.

I'd be very surprised if Adobe do not provide a more up-to-date Flash SDK for Opera to integrate into the new Web Browser for Wii. It has been well over a year since the original version of the Internet Channel released, since then the popularity and ease of use of Wii's Web Browser has had nothing but praise.

Allowing for greater accessibility throughout the Internet via the Wii is beneficial for all parties involved, including Adobe - so restricting this freedom by plainly not providing support would be their loss as much as ours.

Tabs? Very nice. I was hoping for tabs with the release of the full version of the browser. Oh well, at least Nintendo/Opera have finally bothered to throw in tabs which looks to be in the form of a cube.

I prefer the current navigation bar to that new one. The new one looks quite untidy.

I'm 100% sure it'll have Flash 9, not 7 or 10. The Flash 9 SDK is out and the PS3 browser update which boosted speed a lot included Flash 9. I imagine the Wii one will too, unless 64MB ram isn't enough to handle it. As for the browser itself, if it wasn't for the crappy resolution it'd be fantastic, glad to see it keep on getting better.

'Bout time we got tabs...the only real thing that makes browsing via the Wii a slightly painful process for me.

That and an upgrade after so long would be appreciated.

That's why they called it Wii, so you can play with it.

Ehhh... I suppose it's a good update and all.
But I think, console-wise, the PS3 is much better for web browsing.

And that's exactly why. On the PS3 you can have, you know, good resolutions for browsing.

For whoever has mentioned it above, the Internet Channel does have keyboard support.

I see it this way, the PS3 is trying to be PC-like with its browser which is just silly as well we all have PCs. The Wii browser gives us couch browsing which is something I'd actually like, but as I said low res kills it. If it were in HD I'd use it all the time as its really quite great.

Wii's browser is really great. Simple and to the point. Lots of fun flash games to play too. Also they implemented some snazzy button features that make browsing even easier. Youtube on your TV through the internet? What could be cooler? Also I rick rolled my friend via a Wii message, you know how awesome that is?

It's not a matter of "if" but when. Are you seriously going to spend $7.50 for this?

This would be a nice download if I had any friggin room for the new browser! As it is now, I wont even have room for Episode 3 of Strongbad, so I'll have to give this a miss.

YouTube has updated their video player with a new version of flash so the current version of the Internet Channel now can't view it. Hope this new version will have a new flash version installed. Does anybody know if the internet browser on the Nintendo DSi will feature flash support?

I'm currently using the Wii Opera Browser and I just watched a few YouTube videos then.
