Datel set to release their own Wii Remote

Posted 19th of October, 2008 at 09:29 am by Benjamin

Datel are ready to release their 3rd-party Wii Remote in Europe in two weeks.

It will go on sale for Ł29.95 (~AU$74) and can be charged using the supplied USB cable for convenience. It also boasts all features a Wii Remote would be expected to have: rumble, in-built speaker, and motion sensors.

That looks terrible. I can't see myself ever buying one, even if it is a hell of a lot cheaper. Third party hardware sucks.

Can they really call it a Wii Remote? I thought Nintendo would have had that name trademarked.

That'd be like trademarking the term "Xbox 360 controller", and as crazy as IP laws are, I just can't see something like that being allowed.

Rather poor attempt to jump into the third party controller market on Wii, but at least it beats those $20 plastic shells!

Maybe they should have waited until the MotionPlus tech was released, then built it into their own Wiimote (meaning no stupid accessory) and released it in a few colours other than Wii White and then even I would have considered it. But for now I guess they can go rot in the bargain bins with Madcatz PS2 hardware.

hahah, i was like ok it's totally wireless, but does that mean it has wires?
I read one line down and saw NO WIRES, so im now assured that it has no wires (possibly none internally either, which means it works by use of magic)

Heh, I didn't even think of that possibility. They really should have done that! Their loss though!

Their loss? Hardly. It'd take them a while to reverse engineer the Wii Motion Plus to make something that only breaks 4 our of 5 times and be different enough to not get them sued. And once they finally do get around to making one they can release it as an attachment for the minority of people who got good remotes or as an all in one package for those that think Datel may have released a good control the second time around or didn't get caught with the first one.

You guys seriously need to gain some business smarts.

Datel have raped the Wii-Mote, just as Thrustmaster have raped the GameCube controller.

Pretty awful, I wonder how much of the terrible design is Datel sucking and how much is patent related. Regardless the pricepoint needed to be considerably less than the usual remote and its not.

I think there's something wrong with the corn you've been eating. I suggest seeing a doctor right away.

$74? For third party software?

So you're telling me that the Nintendo made controllers are cheaper? Awesome.

Bringing it out before the Christmas holidays is the only way for people to buy this.

Still, I didn't think Nintendo would allow third parties to remake the remote. I can see another lawsuit, this time coming from Nintendo.

Pensioners and people who don't know the difference will be the ones who get caught by this. Selecting the slightly cheaper Wii Remote over the more expensive one.

Didn't Nyko get in trouble with Nintendo not that long ago for their 3rd party Nunchuks. Datel could be next.

Then I'll demand my money back if I find one.
